[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

This is what I’m singing while I’m away.

I’m rebuilding, reworking, rebirthing.

I want to beg of you much as I can to be patient
toward all that’s unsolved in your heart,
and learn to love the questions themselves,
like locked rooms, or like books that are
written in a very foreign tongue.

Do not seek the answers, which cannot be given you,
because you would not be able to live them,
and the point is to live everything.

Live the question now,
perhaps you will then, gradually, without noticing it,
live along some distant day into the answer.

“Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood.”
— from “Self-Reliance” by Ralph Waldo Emerson (via abirdfriend) (via sine-qua-non)

vulnerable

sometimes you need to remind yourself of what you want and why you’re doing what you’re doing.

we have the will to change our minds and our paths. along the way it is common to fall into the familiar grooves, but if we do not step outside of the pattern, we will only end up where we have been before.

distress seeks comfort. familiarity feels comfortable. but if we do not want to repeat the past, we have to risk distress to reach our goal.

it might be easy to melt into your arms. we all need to be held. my heart weeps, but i keep walking.

I'm in love with librarians.

So much fun @ California Library Association conference in Pasadena.

Now if only I didn’t have all this pesky homework….

I recently turned this in as part of a Google Doc class assignment. Maybe I’m losing it.

joshisinfinite:

I get many phonecalls now.
They are all alike.
“are you Charles Bukowski,
the writer?”
“yes,” I tell them.
and they tell me
that they understand my
writing,
and some of them are writers
or want to be writers
and they have dull and
horrible jobs
and they can’t face the room
the apartment
the walls
that night —
they want somebody to talk
to,
and they can’t believe
that I can’t help them
that I don’t know the words.
they can’t believe
that often now
I double up in my room
grab my gut
and say
“Jesus Jesus Jesus, not
again!”
they can’t believe
that the loveless people
the streets
the loneliness
the walls
are mine too.
and when I hang up the phone
they think I have held back my
secret.

I don’t write out of
knowledge.
when the phone rings
I too would like to hear words
that might ease
some of this.

that’s why my number’s
listed.

— Charles Bukowski

My favorite line is this: I too would like to hear words / that might ease / some of this

perfection! i can’t believe i haven’t read this one before.

He drove me to work today and on the way we heard The End of the Road. We couldn’t look at each other.
